Focused on SUVs and electric vehicles, Volkswagen intends to remove the Passat sedan from its catalog.

The Volkswagen Passa t is the second best-selling model in the brand’s history around the world, and its notchback version dominates its segment in Europe. However, according to sources inside Volkswagen cited by Automotive News Europe , the days of the sedan would be numbered. The Passat must be renewed in 2023 and the trunk model would be removed from the catalog in Europe and the United States. The next Passat would therefore be exclusively offered as a station wagon with us.

Notchback sedans are losing market share year after year to SUVs, and at the same time, manufacturers must invest in electric vehicles to comply with regulations. It is for these two reasons that Volkswagen would have decided not to renew the standard Passat after this generation. The Passat is currently produced in Emden (Germany); her replacement will meet in Bratislava (Slovakia).

The Arteon also at the end?

For the same reasons, Volkswagen would not expect to give the Arteon a second generation. The “five-door coupe” like the “hunting” station wagon would be doomed to disappear.

These models would be replaced by the high-end electric sedan and station wagon prefigured by the ID concept cars. Vizzion and ID. Space Vizzion. They are currently being developed under the names Aero and Aero B. The station wagon has been officially announced for 2023.
