Despite its atypical look, the Citroën Ami 6 is one of the most popular models of the chevron firm. Back on its 60 years of history.
It was on April 24, 1961 that Citroën unveiled the Ami 6 to the press, the first car to inaugurate the brand new Rennes-La-Janais plant, Citroën’s first industrial site outside the Paris region. This compact model, first launched as a sedan silhouette, made an impression with its atypical style . An exercise entrusted to Flaminio Bertoni , head of the Citroën style team and to whom we owe in particular the Traction Avant, 2 CV and DS.
The Project AM will subsequently give birth to the Citroën Ami 6 , which takes its name from a strange mixture, associating the name of the project (AM) with the words “miss” (“mademoiselle” in English) and “amici” ( “Friend” in Italian), a nod to Bertoni who was Italian. This one imagined an inverted rear window which stays clean when it rains, and also makes it possible to preserve a volume of trunk and a good habitability at the rear in compact dimensions.
Citroën Ami 6: the second ideal car for Madame
The interior is inspired by the DS, with its single-spoke steering wheel, door handles, controls and seats. Its front face features large rectangular headlights, as well as a plunging hood: a “baroque” style which at the time had also made a lot of noise since the Ami 6 was sold as “the second ideal car for Madame” ! Under the hood, we find a twin-cylinder of 602 cm 3 , derived from that of the 2 CV , and which develops the power of 22 horses.
The station wagon version then arrived in October 1964, which offered a larger load volume to appeal to families, but also to professionals. The Citroën Ami 6 was voted the favorite car of the French in 1966 , and continued its career until 1969, before being replaced by the Ami 8.
In total, 1,039,384 copies of the Ami 6 were produced . In detail, there are 483,986 units of the Sedan (produced from April 1961 to March 1969), 551,880 station wagons (from October 1964 to September 1969), as well as 3,518 Enterprise versions: a two-seater commercial station wagon.
